murder of Galba

kind: assassination · January 69 CE — the editor’s frame · 5 mentions across 5 episodes of the record — counted by the house’s first pass receipt — the deed shelf, first pass receipt — the witness index

Otho's coup: the old emperor cut down by the Lacus Curtius, Piso dragged from the temple of Vesta.

Where the accounts part — the record’s own argument; the witnesses below carry the receipts

Tacitus states the divergence as method: 'His last words have been variously reported according as men hated or admired him.' Plutarch cannot even fix the killer's name — Terentius, Lecanius, or Fabius Fabulus — and follows the severed head by its shameful handles; Suetonius' soldier, finding no hair to grasp, carries it by thumb-in-mouth. The record's most disputed five minutes, served in all three versions.
